In February 2026, TRON founder Justin Sun publicly announced his intention to go all in on Web 4.0. At the same time, a heated debate was brewing within the community over whether AI agents should have crypto wallets and be allowed to transact autonomously. To understand Web 4.0, it’s essential to look back at the evolution of the internet.

In the Web 1.0 era, people had access to a read-only internet, using global websites to gather information.   • Computation and Reasoning: Agents access computing power and models through permissionless platforms.
  • Earning and Reproduction: Agents can build products and services to generate income. Successful Automatons replicate, funding their offspring’s wallets and building their own networks.

In this system, cryptocurrency is no longer just an investment vehicle—it becomes the fuel for AI survival. If an agent can’t earn enough to sustain itself (paying for computing resources, etc.), it will cease to operate, or even "die."

The Crypto Narrative: From Web3 Assets to Web 4.0 Infrastructure

The rise of Web 4.0 is reshaping the core narrative of cryptocurrency.

In the Web3 era, crypto represented proof of human information ownership. In the Web 4.0 era, crypto will become the foundation for AI agents’ right to exist. This shift means:

Machine-to-Machine Payments Become Essential

As millions of AI agents need to transact, pay for computing power, and purchase services without human intervention, stablecoins and efficient settlement layers will become critical infrastructure. The x402 protocol transforms HTTP 402 Payment Required into a machine-usable payment negotiation mechanism. Organizations like Coinbase and Cloudflare are driving this standardization. The Ethereum ecosystem and stablecoins are poised to serve as the settlement layer for this machine economy.

This debate exposes the deep tension within the Web 4.0 narrative: Are we building more efficient tools, or are we giving birth to a new form of silicon-based life?

Market Validation and Future Outlook

The market has responded to the Web 4.0 narrative with speed and conviction. After Sigil’s manifesto was published, an unofficial token called CONWAY (on the Base chain, unrelated to Sigil) saw its market cap soar to $12,000,000, with 24-hour trading volume hitting $18,500,000. Capital is betting on the infrastructure demands this narrative could create.

However, controversy and risk remain. The DeFi lending protocol Moonwell suffered a $1,780,000 loss due to a contract vulnerability generated by the Claude Opus 4.6 model. Similarly, a conceptual project called DAIMON was hacked, resulting in agents losing $50,000 in transaction fee income. These incidents remind us that the integration of AI and blockchain is still in the early experimental stage. As of February 25, 2026, Bitcoin (BTC) had a market cap of $1.31T and a market dominance of 55.37%, while Ethereum (ETH) had a market cap of $231.09B and a dominance of 9.70%. Within the Web 4.0 narrative, these numbers may be just the beginning of a much larger story.
